ive always wanted to go to bills (433 Liverpool Street, Darlinghurst) not because i cook and think bill granger is my idol but because of the riccotta hotcakes with honeycomb butter. HONEYCOMB BUTTER! if theres one way to make butter more tasty its by adding honeycomb. we arrived fairly earli about 9.30ish (heh yeh thats earli for a weekend) and waited about 10mins before scoring a seat at the communal table. can anyone tell me if those apples piled high are free? they looked so shiny and perfect! before long the place was packed and it isnt helped by the mountain of reading material provided.
Ricotta hotcakes with fresh banana and honeycomb butter ($16.60)
and it was worth the earli morning trek to the city becos hell that was a WHOLE banana in there! and that was one ginormous banana! and that little jug of maple syrup wasnt so little it was like a neverending jug! and yes i know im eating pancakes on my day off from work! but they were nice and fluffy kinda like eating the insides of a marshmallo but with ricotta hidden inside! and whats with me using so many exclamation points?!
Sweet corn fritters with roast tomato, spinach and bacon ($16.80)
man those corn kernels were juicy! every bite had a crunch of sweet sweet corn but i couldnt help but wish there was cheese in it hehe but the spinach was fresh and helped balance the friedness… (is friedness a word…)
little warning for those going: go earli or be prepared to wait. and be prepared to wait OUTSIDE in the RAIN. oh and if you go on weekends theres a surcharge… we got smacked $4.57 HOOHAH
Back to home
bill’s is a staple of ours… they’re SO yum :)~ And we always get the hotcakes and corn fritters too! The minute steak sandwich is also a winner.. well, everything there is terrific to be honest . Glad you liked it there too!
— Beverly Jul 18, 08:45 AM #i love his eggs. So creamy and soft, but the ricotta hotcakes are a close 2nd and the corn fritters a whisker away at 3rd.
I don’t remember getting any surcharge. Was it a Sunday surcharge?
Bananas are such a luxury now aren’t they? We’ll be telling our grandkids about the great banana famine of 2006.
— Helen Jul 18, 10:42 AM #Bills irks me. Sorry, that should’ve been ‘bills’. Because i think bills the brand is overhyped and overpriced. There are dozens more places in Surry Hills alone that give you better value for money.
— jl Jul 18, 09:56 PM #Honeycomb in butter? Sounds like caramel to me. Of course you’d eat pancakes, they are a winner any day.
— amie Jul 18, 11:03 PM #beverly: yeah food was pretty good but such a trek to the city (alices is alot closer to us hehe)
— chocolatesuze Jul 19, 07:25 PM #helen: seriously scrambled eggs were that good? like you dont think you could have made it? haha yeah i eat stacks of bananas at work cos its free bwahaha
jl: lol how come dude? u didnt like the food? i did think it was a tad expensive tho
amie: i like caramel hehe but i eat pancakes every day!
hey it’s exactly what i had earlier in the month! .. yea, it’s pricey man, my 45 dollar brekkie for 2 was the most expensive ever.
has anyone tried his ricotta pancake and scrambled eggs recipes? i think we ought to, and calculate the cost. then someone should set up “bills” right at her/his home, and everyone goes there and pays a little bit more to take into account labour.
phew, long comment, sorry :-D
— tian Jul 20, 07:19 AM #The food was good, but it wasn’t exceptional. It certainly wasn’t worth what Mr. Granger was asking.
— jl Jul 21, 10:06 PM #tian: are you offering youre home? you are?? EXCELLENT! TIAN IS COOKING US BREAKFAST!
— chocolatesuze Jul 22, 09:11 PM #jl: lol can ya name another restaurant for me? i want to go in search for the perfect breakfast mmm
