Did you hear about the cardboard filled baos? Check out the article here. A dim-sum restaurant in Beijing was substituting cardboard instead of pork for the filling because the owner (who has fled from authorities) said he saved about US$132 a day due to the rising pork prices from a supply shortage! Hidden cameras found the bun makers – who were shown wearing little more than boxer shorts and thongs showing the lengths the bao zi producers were going to in order to cut costs.

To get the right consistency the cardboard was shown being soaked in caustic soda, a poisonous industrial solvent and then mixed it with about 40 per cent fatty meat and the flavour enhancer monosodium glutamate before selling the bao zi in nearby markets. Hidden camera video is here but its in manderin (at least i think it is cos i dun understand any chinese!) its hell freaky hey? My lil bro is in China atm… dun eat the baos dude!
Back to home
I heard about this – we were all completely gobsmacked at the nerve of these people…and now what happens? All those people that would have eaten these, not knowing what they were putting into their mouths :(
— Ellie Jul 15, 11:55 PM #I’ve heard of this too, oh my goodness it’s awful! I hope nobody gets sick from these! Apparently you can’t really tell the difference in taste either! Eww!
— Katie Jul 16, 12:57 PM #Found your blog through Girl Anachronism…this is big news in Japan. Especially since Japan has been importing a LOT of Chinese foods. The news reported that this “company” has been doing this for over 10 years! Yikes!
— Kat Jul 16, 07:16 PM #As awful as it sounds… at leasts it’s not as bad as using cat or dog meat.
— marvin Jul 17, 04:19 PM #ellie: i know so gross hey?
