a last min dinner with a small group of peeps in honour of chuchu was at Waqu (32 Falcon Street, Crows Nest) a cosy japanese restaurant tucked away on a busy street with an awesomesauce deal with the degustation menu for only $39 on weekdays

signage!

mmm sake cold and burrrrning at the same time huh matty?

Starter – Japanese clear soup with ‘yuba’ tofu sheet. Phwoar the soup was spicy! But in a good way it wasnt burning spicy more peppery and i looove the taste of pepper

Amuse bouche – deep fried soft shell crab taco; beef tataki, ponzu jelly and frying fish roe dressing; fresh spring rolls, black sesame sauce. The soft shell crab taco was slightly messy but then i am a messy eater lol the taco was so crisp and fragile one bite and everything fell out! The beef tataki was awesome so soft and juicy and so very tasty; my tastebuds thought the fresh spring rolls were only ok they were pretty good but just not as sexy as the other two

Sashimi – seared salmon and kingfish, lemon mustard dressing. The sashimi was fantastic and i was prepared to dislike this because sashimi should not be seared it just shouldnt be touched at all right but it was only slightly seared lending a slightly smokey taste to the uber fresh fish and the dressing was interesting chu thought it tasted like sugus lollies…

Entree choice 1 – oven baked miso marinated cod fillet . oh man such a lovely fillet of fish hehe matty was shaking his head in amazement at how such a simple looking piece of fish could taste so good

Entree choice 2 – boiled lamb ‘gyoza’ dumpling in beef broth and olive oil soup . hmm i wasnt a fan of these since i dont like my lamb in any other forms that cutlet…

Extra course of sushi – WAQU rolls: tempura prawn, spiced raw fish, avocado, variety of aioli . How sexy is the presentation and check out the huge mounds of orange and wasabi flying fish roe!

Mains choice 1 – salt black pepper angus beef steak, creamy mashed potato. So so tender and so delicious but oh no so full and see the light brown chips on the top of the plate? Theyre not nuts! They were fried garlic chips!

Mains choice 2 – oven baked spatchcock, WAQU four spice, soy and balsamic vinegar.

Mains choice 3 – breadcrumbed, deep fried pork cutlet, white sauce, ginger spice.

Dessert choice 1 – sweet sake creme caramel . mmm more sake perfect for the creamy smooth caramel

Dessert choice 2 – chocolate cake, vanilla ice cream. ‘real vanilla bean icecream!’ chu exclaims

boey and me
