Umi Kaiten Zushi (Level Ground, Shop 1, 477 Pitt Str/Cnr Hay & Parker St, Haymarket) is one of the better sushi trains in the city however it is a tad more expensive but you do get better quality food and more entertaining sushi chefs hehe start talking to one and all of a sudden 3 more sushi chefs will come and talk to you!

As you enter the restaurant the staff and sushi chefs will join in the chorus of irashaimase (welcome) as you climb rather awkwardly up the high high chairs at the sushi train and the waiters push your chair closer in to the table for you making you feel like a giant child…

Umi means ocean and as you chomp away at the Sansho Soft Shell Crab ($8.80) from the ala carte menu or one of the colourful plates from the trundling sushi train you can stare at the long aquarium wall where happy fishies float around taunting the sashimi with their aliveness…

Swordfish belly sashimi ($8) was delicious if a bit too chunkily cut

Wagyu Beef Umi Style ($13.80). The wagyu was fantastic the serving was a bit small but thats what you get for only 13bux… so we ordered another! Slices of wagyu were cooked to a tender medium rare to liquify the fatty goodness makeing for a melt in the mouth nummyness

Wagyu Beef Tataki ($14.80). For 15bux that was one giant mound of raw beef! Under the beef was a slightly smaller mound of raw spanish onion with a dollop of mayonaise and a dollop of citrus chilli paste on either side of the plate. The rivers of fat in the wagyu might not have been a tops idea for tataki as it made for more chewing but noods gave it a thumbs up
Back to home
Sounds like a bit of a happening place! But the picture of that tataki makes me shudder. From the photo alone, it looks like it would have taken a lot of chewing to eat, and not just because it was cut so thickly.
— Y Oct 7, 10:39 PM #Go for Makoto at corner of Pitt st and Liverpool for nice sushi, won’t regret. But the queue is killing! Umi interior is nice and food presentation is great, but food is not that great.
