SPOILER ALERT! don’t scroll down if you don’t already know the winner of masterchef!

being the host of an online realtime masterchef chat for the past coupla months has taken its toll with dinner invitations turned down and late dinners for the boy who jokes that i spend too much time talking to my imaginary friends heh but the masterchef JOURNEY has finally come to an end. poh. julie. my 2 fav girls in the masterchef competition made it thru to finals. and oh boy was i happy about that! i was devastated when poh lost her taste test challenge to sam and so i turned my support to julie whose unbridled enthusiasm and honesty won me over.
if anyone noticed the Daily Telegraph’s news website so thoughtfully released the results before the conclusion of the masterchef ep even finished! and they released the WRONG article! at 8.57pm an article titled poh’s winning recipe was posted causing an immediate howl of outrage on twitter. the post was eventually taken down and a new post on julie’s win was replaced. BY THE SAME AUTHOR. good work daily telegraph. NOT. the article on poh supposedly winning can be found here followed by julie’s win article here. enjoy.

the question i have been asked so much this week was “who do you think will win?’ followed by ‘who do you think SHOULD win?’ and it annoyed me to bits because i was so emotionally invested in these two ‘characters’. both had flaws in their stress or time management, injuries and just random brain explosions that was both endearing and frustrating.
and so the final episode of masterchef aired and the first challenge- a taste test that had more ‘suspenseful’ pauses than i could poke a stick at managed to eat up half an hour of the 2 hour show. the second challenge was an invention test where the core ingredient was a whole chicken. predictably poh went with hainan chicken rice causing all the malaysians in ‘straya to alternate between cheering and jeering. julie pretty much just copied her challenge with adrian richardson but it was pretty and i guess tasty. challenge three was a pressure test on matt moran’s sexy chocolate dessert which was the undoing for poh who decided not to follow the instructions. but man how sexy looking was the dessert. betcha aria will be booked out now with everyone ordering this dessert. julie wins with the judges giving her an awesome score of 36/40 and will receive the moolah plus the cookbook. poh gets offered a food styling job by curtis. congrats to all the contestants and hey if you guys are interested, masterchef aus have begun accepting applications for the next season here

and on the weekend there was a super last minute auction of the masterchef cakes at zumbo land. returning home from an afternoon of high tea, karen and i made a slight detour to adriano zumbo, knowing we most probably had missed the auction but hoping for a glimpse of everybody’s favourite pâtissier.

and glimpse we did! standing in the doorway of his cafe he notices our wide smiles and bulky dslrs and exclaims foodbloggers! hehe we catch up with lorraine who has been watching a photoshoot for the masterchef cookbook and mel who has organised for the photoshoot cakes to be auctioned off and over $1000 was raised for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. by the time we have arrived the crowd has dispersed and zumbo smiles his oh so cheeky smile before whipping out a platter of tonka bean pannacotta with macarons. oh yes it was so very good.

bwahahaha ignore me im a little too happy looking here
Back to home
I’ve said it elsewhere, and I’ll air my views here too – I kinda wanted Poh to win, only because I can’t stand Julie, but I don’t see it as fair to return people who’ve been eliminated to the competition. So I was going to be unhappy either way :p
I do wish they’d spent more of the show on the actual cooking rather than the damn taste test!
— Fiona Jul 20, 07:22 AM #You know, this is when I wonder why we live in the West and not over East. hmmm zumbo..
As for Masterchef, I think her downfall was at the part she decided to go her own way making the dessert. argh.
— Jean Jul 20, 08:23 AM #now what will i do at 7pm?! oh man its been so much fun!! let’s continue the chat… i’ll see you there at 7pm :p
— sam Jul 20, 11:31 AM #well the 7PM news show thing is on now instead :P
i really thought POH would win (from the 4 or 5 episodes that i have watched) lols
going to download the series now, i never had time to watch it
— Betty Jul 20, 11:37 AM #oh the DRAMA! i was glad both julie and poh were in the final, and i agree, the taste test could definitely have been sped up!
very jealous you got to sample the tonka bean pannacotta and lol at the last photo! i think anyone standing next to a dish like that would have a grin from ear to ear (pun intended. lol!)
— Helen (grabyourfork) Jul 20, 11:38 AM #Ooh yum. Wanted to go, esp after @fooderati/ Mel tweeted photo of photoshoot, but thought it would be too much madness in Balmain!
— aptronym Jul 20, 11:41 AM #I drove past the cafe on Sasturday as I was in Balmain but the queue outside the door of the cafe and patisserie was too daunting.
As for Poh – did anyone else notice she said that Hainan chicken is from Hunan? No Poh. It’s from Hainan Island in China, near HK. Not the Hunan region. I wanted to Poh to win the final more than Julie but hard to argue when she was beaten fair and square in all 3 challenges.
— Forager Jul 20, 11:43 AM #I think Justine should win. I was heart broken when she got eliminated early last week.
— Ellie Jul 20, 01:17 PM #Not the most mature conversation goin’ on in the chat room last night.. it has been a few years since I’ve been in IRC land, I should be used to it but suppose I’m just out of practise! Awesome shot with the Zumbmeister and OM NOM envy is overwhelming :)
— Deb Jul 20, 01:52 PM #I was going for Julie :) I’m glad you put the warning up about the spoiler at the top – I thought the daily telegraph story spoiled the episode and really wished it hadn’t been fwded on by people! (even if it wasn’t true!). Hehe, noods must be glad the series is over :)
— Lene Jul 20, 02:13 PM #Hilarious that the Daily Telegraph posted up the wrong article! And you’re so lucky that you got to taste the pannacotta… I’m experiencing massive food envy!
— Jacq Jul 20, 04:55 PM #* cry cry cry * I wish I had gone with you girls! :( LOL the Daily Telegraph was so full of fail, and so was that random who was trying to spoil it for us by yelling out the Telegraph’s report in the chat. Haha epic fail!
— Steph Jul 20, 07:53 PM #Hehe I have to thank you Suze for persuading me at the last traffic light to go! Awesome dessert and can’t wait for Masterchef 2010!
— Karen Jul 21, 01:11 AM #sadly my work didn’t allow me to come home before the show ended (which I’m pretty annoyed at.) I wanted Poh but I guess both of them totally deserved to win either way eh?
So jealous that you got a taste of the pannacotta!!
— Yas Jul 21, 10:41 PM #I attempted making Mr Zumbo’s Chocolate Mousse cake that was on Masterchef……it took my husband and I 4 hours!
— Brenda Jul 22, 03:08 PM #You are so lucky to be able to have tried his pannacotta….I’m very jealous!
fiona: the taste test was stupid! SUCH a waste of time with all those pauses from george argh!
— chocolatesuze Jul 23, 06:17 PM #jean: yeah poh stuffed up and it was her own fault for not following the recipe bah!
