In the 1920s a public contest was held to name the original Vegemite. This year, a new Vegemite spin-off was created of a Vegemite and cream cheese mix which was supposedly milder in taste and easier to spread than the original. After a three-month, nationwide naming competition Kraft Foods announced the winning name:

Vegemite iSnack2.0 and the product’s tag line reads: “iSnack 2.0, because it’s the next generation Vegemite.” And oh how the world rallied! Outrage and a whole lotta cussing streamed onto the interwebs. Twitter became flooded with the howls of indignation and a website even popped up called Names that are better than iSnack2.0

A mere four days later and The Australian reports that “Kraft announced it was bowing to the court of public opinion over the internet and iPod-inspired name, saying it would announce a new competition on Friday in which the public will be allowed to vote on a name to replace iSnack2.0.” Power of the people yo!

Back to home
There was talk that Vegemite felt so secure of their place in the market that “any publicity was good publicity”. They were right though, so maybe it was all in their plan? Now everyone knows of their new Vegemite/Cheese spread because of their epic fail name. Haha :D
— mae Oct 1, 03:27 AM #The poor guy who won was so excited on his facebook page too, poor thing!
— Fiona Oct 1, 09:38 AM #Here’s what I don’t get, why go through the pretense of a competition once more when they’ve still got a whole heap of runner-up names to choose from?!
But yeah good publicity stunt if it was one – I don’t care much for Vegemite but this cream-cheese mix is beginning to sound yum. :9
— mooiness Oct 1, 11:00 AM #They should this time not leave the actual decision up to Kraft executives and let the public vote on the name based on a shortlist. You know, take a leaf out of Big Brother’s book, Australian Idol’s or any other reality TV show winner based on popular vote.
— Simon Oct 1, 05:56 PM #yeah isnack sounds stupid..
— betty Oct 1, 07:41 PM #isnack 2.0? Surely there are other names better than that. What are the executives @ Kraft are thinking?!
Did you watch the all new ‘Hey hey its Saturday’ now shown on Wednesdays >.> During Red Faces, there’s this boy that found 5 other uses of Vegemite.
— sugarpuffi Oct 2, 02:40 AM #iSnack 2.0 was a total epic fail. worst product name ever! iSuck 2.0 FTW!
