I walk thru World Square Shopping Centre pretty much every day and have always seen the signboard pimping the Mochiyaki but have never actually stopped and looked further. Shu Shin Bou used to be in the Maxim center in Haymarket but is now attached to the Miracle Supermarket, Lower Ground World Square Shopping Centre, 644 George St, Sydney.
They specialise in Japanese dessert and sweets made with the base of sticky rice cakes aka mochi. I have issues with mochi in general so Mochiyaki never really sounded appealing to me. But the smells of something being freshly baked was just too much to resist…

Like a kid in a candy store I pressed my face to the glass to watch this machine being filled with batter, a dollop of either red bean, custard or green tea filling added and then the machine’s plates are clamped shut to bake.

Plate of Mochiyaki babies! Not too sure what the character of the Mochiyaki is supposed to be but aren’t they the cutest!

I hate red bean so I got 3 green tea and 3 custard Mochiyaki (6 for $5) and dudes they are freaking awesome but you gotta have em hot! They’re like a fat, dense, pancake with a squidge of a slightly gummy filling.

Nom nom nom

Back to home
I, unlike you, have NEVER had an issue with mochi. In fact I pretty much want to marry that little mochi man. looks SO DELISH! do they do ice cream mochis???
