Desserts at Eathouse Diner, Redfern

9 February 2011, 08:15

ATTACK! Multiple mentions on the wonders that were the desserts at Eathouse (306 Chalmers Street, Redfern) from the twitterverse meant that I had pretty high expectations and knew to not fill up my stomach with mains tho a standout was the duck liver pate ($18) so smooth and creamy I could totes eat 3 plates! But the desserts ahhh how they stopped us in mid sentence! Ordering 1 of everything is the best thing to do when eating with 9 other dessert hungry souls.

Strawberry and chocolate sundae ($9) It’s just so beautiful! Double rainbow beautiful! Giant scoops of vanilla ice cream drowned in rich chocolate sauce and topped with the sweetest strawberries imaginable, it is a classic at its best.

The Chocolate and cherry tart ($9) is a tad too bitter for my tastebuds after the sundaes’ sweetness but my spoon is still irresistibly drawn to it and I alternate swiping spoonfuls of the other desserts with the tart to balance all the sugar out.

Banana split ($9). There’s just something about plastic umbrellas that makes me grin inanely and remind me of lazy days at the beach. Don’t they make you happy too? Say it’s not just me… Sadly the bananas were not ripe and trying to cut into the fruit with a spoon was hazardous to the person sitting opposite as pieces would go flying in the air but the rivers of chocolate sauce and splodges of dulce de leche and whole roasted hazelnuts over the mountains of ice cream kinda made up for it.

Helen commented that the Eathouse Mess ($9) didn’t look too messy which of course led to all of us stabbing away with our spoons heh. The meringue was crisp on the outside with melty soft innards and not a trace of the dreaded uncooked egg white smell. (I like the word meringue. It reminds me of that dancing merengue dog. Moving along.) The generous dollop of cream is perfect with the plump raspberries however the peaches had a weird taste- an unpleasant sweetness as if they’d been soaked in soft drink?

But it is the Banoffee pie ($9) which holds the key to my heart (sorry Noods). The tart base is crumbly and so buttery it was like, I-can’t-believe-it’s-not-all-butter! Hot damn line my soul with buttery awesomeness and fill ‘er up with delicious dulce de leche! Again, a shame the bananas weren’t ripe but hey let’s not dwell on such negativity when there is a cloud of whipped cream haloing the filling. I can see your halo… (Speaking of Beyonce, who loved the Warblers rendition of Bills, Bills, Bills on Glee?)

Go to Eathouse yo! Warning they don’t take reservations so rock up nice and early to score a table.

And if the night is still young head across the road to the pub and play a cracking game of jenga :D
