Smith's on Bayswater, Kings Cross

1 June 2011, 12:40

OH HAI! How’s your week been dudes? I have been horribly sick this past week thanks to too much dancing in the streets heh. There has been birthday celebrations galore and over the weekend after stalking their brunch menu for ages, I chose Smith’s on Bayswater (32 Bayswater Rd, Kings Cross) for the family clan to meet up. The former home of Bayswater Brasserie, the restaurant is bright and decked out with all important heaters for a perfect weekend lunch.

Complimentary basket of sourdough bread to start us off and glasses of tapwater immediately poured, service was friendly, attentive and just plain awesome. I don’t normally comment on service but it makes dining at a restaurant that much more memorable when waiters are happy humans.

The father unit has opted for the 62 degree egg with swiss brown mushrooms, potato, garlic and parsley ($9) with a side of bacon ($6). No oozy egg yolk innard shot because I took one look away and bam it was gone!

The brother bot has his sights set on the home made baked beans with house beef and pork sausages ($16). The beans I managed to swipe when he wasn’t looking were delicious plump specimens. I like the word plump. These beans were the very definition of plump. I didn’t get to try the sausages cos er I was busy taking photos and it seems my family are fast eaters…

The chicken liver parfait ($12) is calling my name and arrives on the cutest plank of wood in a ginormous glass that I gleefully slathered onto the butter laden crisps. Smooth, creamy, unctuous. I could totally eat my body weight of this parfait.

Just like how I have a weakness for chicken liver parfait, Noods has a weakness with steak tartare ($18). Perfectly seasoned, hand cut steak nubbins topped with a glistening quail egg- that was one sexy pile of raw meat!

From the lunch menu the mothership has chosen the seafood soup with the salmon, potato, yamba prawns and baby squid ($18). The smell of the cumin spiced seafood broth when it was poured at the table was incredible! Rich and heady, perfect for this crummy winter weather we’ve been having. Seriously what is up with the crap weather yo

Shirley’s 14 hour Kurobuta pork neck ($28) had the whole table drooling at the crisp tiles of pork crackle which she generously shared hehe cos sharing is caring! The pork is tender and dare I use the word- MOIST.

And the reason why I chose to come here: THE REUBEN SANDWICH ($16) OH BABY YEAH! Slices of awesome house corned Wagyu with the perfect ratio of sauerkraut, gruyere and dressing on rye bread. Freaking awesome! And um freaking massive for my teeny stomach. It comes a very close second to the Reuben at Felix mainly because the cheese wasn’t melty. I like melty cheese.

The mother in law has chosen the free range spatchcock ($28) and while it is impressive looking with tender, juicy meat she is sad there is no sides with it other than that lime half so she orders a salad:

The fig salad ($16) is a welcome sight of greenery and we all dive into the pile of rocket covered in a healthy scattering of pecorino nubbins.

Dessert time and I can haz sparkler!!! Cos it’s my b’day dontcha know :P

The peanut butter cream ($12) was a deliciously smooth pannacotta that hit all the right salty peanuty notes and was topped with a banana sorbet, lime and ginger granita and maple syrup honeycomb shards. It was deceptively filling and all too soon I was clutching my stomach in protest.

Churros ($9) are of the fat donut variety, crispy on the edges with soft and fluffy innards just begging to be dipped in the chocolate sauce.

Unfortunately pretty soon the brunch menu will be discontinued so get there fast if ya want to try it out dudes. We were able to order from the brunch and lunch menu but sadly didn’t order any steaks even tho this place is pretty well known for their cut to order steaks so will def have to return.
