Mad Spuds Cafe, Surry Hills

  10 May 2012

Come on Summer! Fight back! Let us enjoy warmth and sunshine for a bit longer! In dire need of Vitamin D I’ve been taking random walks at lunch around my work hood and enjoying finding random cafes and restaurants to stalk. Mad Spuds Cafe (479 Crown St, Surry Hills) is a quirky little place that I couldn’t resist visiting on consecutive days for lunch, with crazy potato head figurines and of course a menu featuring my all time favourite vegetable.

Day 1 and I’ve immediately ordered the Little Piggy ($14), a baked potato with crispy bacon strips, crumbly fetta, stretchy mozzarella, topped with a cheddar chip and a dollop of sour cream. It is glorious and incredibly filling, the seven seed coleslaw is refreshing and strangely quite addictive for this generally non-salad girl.

Day 2 sees the 4 Cheese Spud ($14), a baked potato with goat cheese, brie, mozzarella, feta and sour cream however I’m not a huge fan of goat cheese and switch it for cheddar cheese. And holy moly mega cheese overload! I love my dairy but this was bordering overkill haha I was taking huge forkfuls of that salad to balance out the richness.

Day 3 and I’ve decided to give my arteries a lil reprieve and have opted for the Crispy Bacon and Brie ($12) toasted sandwich. It is extremely satisfying and I feel vaguely healthier eating my carbohydrate in toasty bread form. But you know, with bacon and um more brie sandwiched in between 😛 A pile of potato skins has the perfect crunch to fluffy soft innards ratio and is perfect with just a dab of the sweet chilli sauce. There’s a potato pancake on the menu that I’m quite intrigued by so will be taking more walks soon!
