EDIT: CLOSED
Broadsheet has set up a popup restaurant at the old Devon on Danks location in Waterloo and have some of Sydney’s best restaurants on board for one killer of a menu. It reads like a greatest hits of Sydney’s fave dishes, with the boys from Bulletin Place rocking out a mean cocktail and a wine list curated by Nomad Wines.
We start with 10 William St’s Whipped Bottarga Pretzel ($15) is as amazing as I remember. The seed studded pretzel is warm and crusty and perfect to tear off and dunk into the creamy bottarga dip dusted with cured mullet roe. The dip isn’t as generous a serve as it is at 10 William St but it’s still damn tasty and we mop up the entire plate leaving no crumbs.
I loved Balcon by Tapavino’s Octopus with Kipfler Potatoes and Paprika ($20). The octopus was incredibly tender with a great smoky char that went well with the buttery potatoes.
I saw pics on IG of Master’s T-Bone with Black Pepper and Shrimp Butter ($32) and knew I HAD to have it. Sadly our disc of butter had already melted by the time it arrived to our table but the t-bone was one fabulous piece of meat cooked to a delicious medium rare and I had to stop talking so I could concentrate on ingesting as much steak as my jaws could handle. Granted I’m bound to like anything that’s covered in butter but man that butter! Prawn umami max!
I’ll admit when The Apollo’s Kritharaki Pasta with Braised Oxtail, Tomato and Skordalia ($22) arrived I wasn’t too wowed by the presentation and kept scarfing down the steak but HOLY CRAP THIS WAS JUST SO FRICKEN AMAZING I’M WRITING IN CAPS! From the first scoop onto my plate there was this amazing aroma of butter that just flooded my senses. There was such a generous amount of incredibly tender braised oxtail buried within the rice like Kritharaki pasta. And the fried breadcrumbs scattered throughout provided a pleasing crunch with each bite and had us scraping the bowl for any hidden remnants. Comfort food at it’s finest!
The dessert menu is short and sweet, we skip past Good Time’s soft serve of the day, Shortstop’s donuts and Winnow Chocolate’s after dinner mint chocolate bar in favour for The Unicorn’s Pavlova ($12). It’s a perfect summer-y dessert, the crisp meringue is layered with banana custard and topped with fresh mango, strawberries, blueberries and mint but is strangely missing the quintessential passionfruit.
The Broadsheet Restaurant popup ends 4th December so get in quick!

Brunch at Saint Peter, Paddington
Sea Urchin on a crumpet. Need I say more? Saint Peter showcases Australian sustainably sourced seafood and it is freakin amazing!
Ahhh sea urchin. I remember a time when I was not a fan of sea urchin and its weird texture and intense sea flavour. But after a trip to Japan’s Tsukiji Markets, everything changed. My world exploded and I’ve never been the same and have constantly craved it! So when I saw the Sea Urchin Crumpet ($16) at newly opened Saint Peter in Paddington I knew I had to have it.
I loved carefully spooning out the petals of sea urchin and draping it across the crumpet which was oh so buttery and flakey. It’s pretty damn amazing and next time I won’t be sharing!
Noods is allergic to prawns and to make up for it he’ll lock in on any other seafood that resembles it so he ordered the Marron scrambled eggs ($32) which is impressively presented. The scrambled eggs are incredibly light and fluffy and the generous amount of marron pieces are plump, juicy and delicious.
The Hand Picked Spanner Crab Omelette ($28) is a cloud-like dream and puts all other omelettes to shame. There’s a surprising hit of umami thanks to the intense fish broth which we dunked forkfuls of omelette into. We slyly separate the delicate and sweet spanner crab to savour on its own.
The cake of the day ($16) is a creme patisserie custard filling sandwiched between layers of crisp dacquoise and with mulberries and native thyme on the side. It’s not too sweet or rich and a perfect end to a lazy weekend brunch.
I’m super keen to return to Saint Peter for dinner, there’s a 1.2kg Cleveland Bay halibut with 40 fricken cloves of garlic that is calling to me!

Moxhe, Bronte
Moxhe In Bronte is a Modern Australian restaurant with a focus on fresh seafood and with a daily specials board revolving around what is sourced at the fish market that morning.
So the boy and I celebrated 15 years of putting up with each other. Huzzah! To mark the occasion we headed to Moxhe in Bronte for their $69pp degustation menu and with matching wines $45pp. The restaurant is run by David Coumont (formerly fish face and Cafe Paci) and Helen Diab (formerly Pier and Berowra Waters Inn) and I’d been stalking Moxhe on IG for quite some time now, staring at all the fresh seafood they would post. Their specials menu rotates daily depending on what they source from the Fish Markets that morning.
We start with an amuse of pickled mussels which are impressively plump and juicy with barely the need to chew.
Followed by beer blinis cooked to order with a generous amount of delicately sweet spanner crab and a tiny asparagus spear.
The Salted Fish Tart is a revelation, I’d originally envisioned some heavy, stodgy tart and for it to be overwhelmingly salty but it was the exact opposite! I’ve never had a tart so ridiculously light, flaky and buttery before and the fish filling was perfectly balanced with the briny pops of salmon roe.
Grilled Octopus & Pippies is a play on the beach- the oyster emulsion is the foam from the sea, the wonderfully smoky octopus is the driftwood used in bonfires and digging around the sand of the fried breadcrumbs to get to the tender pippies.
We absolutely adored the Poached Rankin Cod, I think I’ve only ever eaten cod when it’s been marinated in miso so I just loved how fresh this dish tasted with the parsley oil! I felt so healthy with dem fat broadbeans, asparagus and rapa leaves 😛
Plump, hand-harvested scallops are lightly seared with a rich scallop roe sauce and an egg brouillade. This was an optional course ($20) and Helen actually suggested it would be perfect for us to share instead of ordering one each which I really appreciated. This dish was bang on perfect, I thought the sauce might overpower the delicate scallops but it was just the right amount of richness.
And last of the savoury courses is the Crispy skin Spanish mackerel, cooked to a beautiful medium rare. Mackerel is my 2nd fave oily fish in all the lands so I was pleased that this was on the dego menu! That hunk o fish was enough to fill my omega-3 intake for the week and it was just deeeelicious. I liked the jumble of heirloom carrots and radishes but wasn’t too keen on the couscous but that’s just me hatin on couscous as per usual.
Next was a palate cleanser of fennel and squid ink ice cream. The colour is definitely shocking and vibrant and Noods took great delight in grinning with black teeth at me.
Dessert was so beautifully presented and such a perfect summery dessert! A scoop of cardamon ice cream was drizzled with an orange sauce and shards of dehydrated meringue hold down the fort against dollops of ridiculously smooth white chocolate mousse.
There was an optional cheese course ($10) but cheese is never an option- it’s a must order. I scored a selection of incredible cheeses: Comte, Fourme d’Ambert blue, Caprifeuille St. Maure goat cheese and a Camembert Fermier as well as rhubarb compote, mixed nuts, butter and a pretty generous plate of warm house made sourdough bread.
I had such an incredible meal at Moxhe and seriously guys, it’s such great value! Impeccable food and such lovely warm and down to earth service, I can’t wait to return!

Welcome Dose Specialty Coffee @ Saporium, Rosebery
In need of coffee? Head for the light filled Welcome Dose Specialty Coffee at the newly opened Saporium in Rosebery, a warehouse next to The Cannery.
Hope ya’ll had a great long weekend! I had such a blast these past coupla days, dancing to old skool Britney at Plan B, eating large amounts of pizza at The Dolphin and finally checking out Saporium in Rosebery, a warehouse next to The Cannery. Currently vendors include Grain Organic Bakery, Zeus Street Greek, 5th Earl, Vive Cooking School, Three Blue Ducks, Wholefoods House, Kingsmore Meats and The Choc Pot but today we’re in need of coffee and head straight for the light filled Welcome Dose Specialty Coffee.
Ironically I forgot to take a photo of the coffees ahahaha my bad but hey onto the food! We start with the Eggs & Soldiers ($12) with perfectly gooey egg yolk innards and sourdough soldiers (bread’s sourced from Brickfields) with a minced mushroom mixture. I absolutely loved the sesame and wakame seaweed salt which upped the umami factor to max. Please sell this by the jar guys!
Hehe Noods always complains whenever I make him eggs and soldiers because I cbf cutting the bread properly so it never fits into the egg 😛
I absolutely HAD to get the Cheese Toastie ($12) when I saw it arrive at the table next to us. I mean, LOOK AT IT! There’s a pretty generous amount of Gruyere and Swiss Cheese and a nice schmear of truffle paste on brioche that’s been toasted for optimal cheese melty-ness.
Mmmm cheese <3
I’ve been weirdly craving fresh peas lately so had to order the Smashed Peas ($13)- the toasted sourdough is smothered in a lemon ricotta and layered with peas, mint and baby herbs. I saw that there was Maple Glazed Speck ($5) available as a side which was a bit weird because hadn’t seen speck anywhere on the menu but hey, speck! Speck is so friggen amazing and this was no exception, there was a sweet hit of maple syrup which was tempered by the light smokiness within the meat.
Welcome Dose roasts its coffee in house with the coffee roaster taking pride of place in the middle of the room. I’m looking forward to many more caffeine hits!
