Cafes in Korea are seriously next level and Standard Bread in Seongs is one of my faves and not just because of the smiley face bread staring at me. The café bakes all their bread on site and has a beautiful outdoor courtyard with a rustic but cosy interior.
The bruleed French toast arrives sizzling in a skillet and custard is poured around the bread. It is incredible! The bread is light and fluffy and the bruleed golden surface is sweet but tempered by the creaminess of the custard.
The truffle mushroom soup was ordered randomly because I wanted something savoury but it turned out to be the most incredibly fragrant soup I’ve ever had and it tasted like real truffle paste had been used with only a touch of truffle oil on top.
The tissue bread was just so fun to peel off each layer slowly, it was buttery and delicious and I enjoyed it plain and also dunking into the soup.

Legends Morgy and Nathan of wine bar Bar Copains have opened Bessies in Surry Hills.
You absolutely have to get the fluffy sourdough flatbread with garlic and herbs which is perfect to dip into the whipped cod roe.
The Moreton Bay bug sandwich has the perfect crunch to soft fluffy bread ratio and my fave of the night were these plump wood fired prawns with lardo and paprika oil.
The Rangers Valley flank steak was a perfect medium rare with a bright and zingy vine leaf chimichurri
For dessert I couldn’t resist the zesty lemon meringue marshmallow and the wood fired Portuguese tart is ridiculously light and flaky with the perfect sweetness. Finally the coconut, mango and lime is beautifully presented and a great end to the meal.

I’m attempting to venture further out west and Late Night Table in Strathfield has long been on my list to visit. We start off with ginormous chunks of fresh honeycomb with makgeoli to get the party going.
The Sashimi platter comes with scallops, Ama Ebi prawns, Tasmanian uni, tuna, Yarta Valley Ikura and crisp sheets of seaweed. A cup of shin ramen with a fat uni arrives as a bonus dish about 10mins later The prawn pasta is a pretty generous portion and comes spilling out of a cobb loaf. The sauce is super creamy and cheesy and the prawns are plump juicy specimens.
I loved the rice part in the beef tartare with cockles bibimbap but I had issues with all the differing textures and wished this was a warmer dish.
The prosciutto melon was ordered on a whim and we loved ending the meal on this, the rockmelon and honeydew were ripe and super sweet.

Island Radio is my fave restaurant in the new Wunderlich Lane precinct with a menu covering all the South East Asian hits.
Some absolute must orders are the incredible scallop silk with Andy’s sambal; the flakey potato curry puff, the prawn roti and the toasted rice bread with a slathering of whipped sambal butter.
The duck lumpia is satisfyingly crunchy and has an unexpected Culinary Class Wars shredded wonton wrapper presentation.
The sate plate is great for sharing and comes with pork, chicken and ox tongue skewers.
The yellow rock flathead curry is beautifully fragrant and perfect over the Sinagang fried rice and the crispy lamb ribs are swirled with a glorious caramelised sambal.
For dessert there’s Kopiko tres leches and the presentation of the pineapple boat elicits laughs at the table but it is delicious and filled with pineapple jam, fresh mango, whipped cream and coconut.
