Wagaya, Haymarket
Wagaya (Level 1, 78-86 Harbour Street, Haymarket) is most known for its novelty factor of touch screens mounted on the wall. oh and for the deep fried cheese!
im sure you’ve read enough about Wagaya (Level 1, 78-86 Harbour Street, Haymarket) so ill keep it short and let the photos do the talking. after an awesome time at Taste of Sydney and munching on some incredible eats, Helen, Billy, Yas and I were in need of more sustenance and preferably somewhere that was air-conditioned and had comfy seating.
Wagaya is most known for its novelty factor of touch screens mounted on the wall and with a few taps we have soon ordered our food and drinks. there are also laminated menus for the table
Mentai potato salad ($6.80). i dont remember eating this. um. but it looked good?
Dragon roll ($9.50). i really like this photo. heh can you see im having trouble with my not so awesome memory?
Crab chawanmushi ($6.50). it’s like custard! but savoury and warm and velvety smooth.
Sushi roulette game ($8.50). the second thing wagaya is famous for is its sushi roulette! 6 pieces of salmon sushi arrive, each with a smear of wasabi on the outside but one piece is hiding a whole crapload of wasabi inside. Helen notices me eyeing each piece trying to determine which is the ‘wasabi bomb’ and immediately sets some ground rules. the first one being someone spins the plate while the sushi eater closes their eyes and picks their sushi. we agree and one by one each take a deep breath before stuffing the sushi in our mouths. being the pansy i bite my sushi in half just in case heh
turns out it was helens lucky day and at first as she chews in silence she suddenly reacts with a ack holy &$*#!!! we crack up and laugh and take photos of helen as she struggles to regain some feeling in her tastebuds heh heh (image is from Billy heh love the drawing dude!)
Salmon skin age ($4.50). mmm deepfried skin was so tasty if a little chewy
Crumbed cheese ($6.50). i had heard rumours of deep fried cubes of cheese at wagaya and was so overjoyed to find it. it doesnt take much to make me happy especially if it’s food that has been deepfried and these babies didnt disappoint! crunchy on the outside and gooey melty cheesey innards these were so tasty we ordered a second serve
Deep-fried chicken karaage ($6.90). i dont remember eating this. i dont think i ate it…
Shishamo fried ($7.50). i dont remember this either haha my memory is such a fail!
Ox tongue ($5.50). i remember this tho! i had never tried ox tongue before and was determined to try it. but every time i picked up the stick i would cringe and have flashbacks of seeing cows eating and their tongues flicking around… i ended up having to close my eyes and nibbling a piece. it wasnt so bad i guess. tastes like pork! um chewy flat pork!
Scallop and garlic fried rice ($9.90). Yas is still hungry and orders this bowl of rice. as we stir the rice we find to our delight there is a golden crust of crispy rice on the bottom and while i am full i manage to find some room for a bowl. all up our bill is just over $120 and is nowhere near as jaw dropping as the bill Howard managed to rack up- a whopping $1140!

ive been reading the girl who are everything for a while now. robyn, aka roboppy has been blogging since 2004 and has written about her experiences with a “no wheat or rice or other things resembling wheat or rice diet” thru to her love of manatees (tho not for eating) and proclaiming the wonders of macarons even documenting them for ‘research purposes’. that crazy rabbit above is called poofy and is one of many random drawings that can be found floating around. she works at serious eats one of my most fav websites EVAH where comparing pizza quality is part of her everyday job tasks.
but anyways. lookit my the candy stash! a while ago shed written that she had only just been introduced to milo and ovaltine and so a candy swap was put in place. to the boppy i sent milo candy bars, milo energy bars, 2 packets of ovaltine candy and um a packet of bertie beetles because i love em heh and in return i scored me a packet of peanut butter hersheys kisses, packet of cinnamon chips for baking, reeses peanut butter cups, reeses nutrageous chocolate bar and a hersheys 5th avenue chocolate bar mmm sugar coma will be setting in soon heh thanks heaps for doing the swap with me robyn!

(hey dudes im actually in sydney i went to melb 2 weeks ago. i wont be at eveleigh markets this sat because ill be at rouse hill markets and the week after ill be at mosman markets so will return to eveleigh on the 11th april cheers)
after our last test drives finished up for the day the brother unit wanted to take me out to dinner to thank me for helping out. he gave me the choice of going to nobu or lord of the fries. it was agony i tells you! id been hearing so much about lord of the fries and of course everyone always raves about nobu. in the end we decided to go to nobu for dinner and try and make it to lord of the fries for ‘dessert’ heh i’m deliberately copying his pose
so we rocked up to crown casino and into Nobu (8 Whiteman St, Southbank at Crown, VIC) where we were quite abruptly told that since we had no reservations we would have to sit at the sushi counter. but that was fine by us cos i like chatting to the sushi chefs and also you score free stuff!
like this bowl of edamame! the menu says they would’ve charged $6! salty sweet soybeany awesomeness which were so very moreish. oh and the couple next to us ate the pods. heh uh not that it’s not edible but most ppl dont eat them yeah?
salmon tartar with caviar ($19). presentation of this was so pretty yet i wished the sauce the salmon tartar was sitting in was on the side because it ended up being super salty towards the end. but it was tasty and the salmon super fresh. yeah i have no idea what that reddish pink thing was so i didnt eat it just in case…
Sashimi ‘Tacos’ with Yellowtail, Salmon, Lobster and Crab ($18). considering the brother unit isnt a fan of seafood i was pretty surprised when he eyed the plate and asks if he can eat one. and then a second one lol prolly because of the novelty of tacos. or he couldve been really hungry =P
OM NOM NOM
Soft Shell Crab Kara Age ($20). the little piles of powder were salt, pepper and in the spoon was lemon juice (i think!). i like ripping off the legs of soft shell crabs because im sadistic like that heh
Eel sushi ($4.50), Scallop sushi ($5). hm i wasn’t too happy about paying 5bux for 1 piece of sushi but the eel had a gorgeous charcoaly smokey edge and was buttery soft edit: actually maybe it was 5bux for 2 pieces. my memory is so awesome
Prawn Tempura – In/Out sushi roll ($14) we loved this and ordered it twice hehe the prawn was so fresh and the tempura coating was light and crispy
thanks for dinner lil brother!
we skipped dessert at nobu to see if we’d make it to lord of the fries but it was sadly closed and i guess it was a good thing because i dont think i couldve handled a box of deepfried starch… but next door i spotted a giant soft serve lamp! man i’ve been looking for one of these since forever so if you know where i can get one in sydney let me know!
and what totally made my day when i went into walker’s doughnuts (cnr flinders & elisabeth st, melb) to have a gander at their donuts were these giant chocolate eclairs! seriously these were humongous! and freaking heavy! i think i paid $4 for this tasty baby and oh boy it was so worth it!
yeah i wanted to show you my gingerbread man pjs (from peter alexander- thanks lene!) heh and yes i brought the macbook along because i didnt think i could handle 3 whole days of no internet lol luckily we had free adsl access or i wouldve gone crazy!
last shot of the chocolate eclair with a view of its glorious innards! look at all that custardy creamy goodness! oh yes it was so very good and a perfect end to my short trip to melbourne. ahh so much delicious eats i cant wait to go back!
melbourne part 2

now where was i? right. so anyways we were staying at a hotel which looked over the famous Acland St!
where fabulous colourful displays sit atop rooftops and bridges and even trams but most of all famous for:
cakes. pastries. and all things sweet. oh yes i was squealing with joy and doing happy dances! the four cake stores sat next to each other with their windows proudly displaying their delicious wares. (btw pic of europa is off google maps) and sure some people say that the cake stores arent that great since they have to compete with each other on a strip of less than 25meters and have to cram as much variety as possible into the window space to get people to choose their store over their competitors. but hey it is just so much fun having to choose what to eat!
if i had more time there i wouldve liked to try a cake that they all made and done a blind taste testing. ah next time i promise! from the acland cake shop we have an apricot danish which the brother demolished, from le bon was a gorgeous cannoli with crispy pastry and a creamy filling, from the monarch was the most fabulous cheesecake EVAH! apparently it was a polish cheesecake baked from a 100 year old recipe. yeah it was awesome. i ate that before i went to nobu meaning to eat only a spoonful but uh couldnt stop myself. heh and lastly from europa cake shop i have no idea what they were called but they were macaron looking and a very strong taste of almond essence which is good if you like almond essence…
heh they are cute no?
also on acland st is my new favourite gelato store called trampoline and ah how the flavours boggles the mind! my 2 flavours were peanut brittle and gingerbread. oh yes that’s right gingerbread! it was so very awesome with pieces of gingerbread hidden in the scoop. the peanut nutter had crispy crunchy nuggets of peanut brittle that i liked gnashing my teeth into heh i like things in my icecream. other weird flavours they had when i went which i had wanted to try but ran outta time were lamington and easter egg (!!!)
i managed to sneak off to the queen victoria markets for half n hr having never been before. yeh i know shameful hey! warning for all you ppl who want to visit the markets they are NOT open on mondays or wednesdays and every other day has diff closing hours so uh google it before you go!
inside the deli hall which smelled so very good
mmm deli meats. heh i was standing behind a group of primary school kids on an excursion and i heard one of the teachers say to a student “you bought bread but no meat for your sandwich?”
meat hall where the majority of stalls had butchers out the front spruiking pretty loudly
seafood hall
this guy was selling wine from kegs!
sadness donut truck was closed! id be looking forward to donuts all day and theyd run outta donuts!
to console myself from lack of donuts i bought some chocolates from xocolatl. flavours were peanut butter & jelly, gianduja mousse, dark chocolate & gingerbread, and argh i cant remember the last one oops my bad
pizza to eat in the car! romano crust (pesto, parmesan cheese, roma tomatoes and pine nuts). it was tasty but ah how i had wanted donuts!
