so the brother unit had to test out this gps thing for work where basically he goes to diff cities in aus and drives around and takes notes and stuff. the mothership went with him to brisvegas, the fathership to perth and i to melbourne- city of trams, crazy hook turns and fabulous food!
but first i had to endure plane food. theres something about plane food that i quite enjoy. not so much the taste but more the breaking up of journey. we economy class passengers had the choice of the sandwich OR AN APPLE. seriously we couldnt have both we had to choose! the sandwich label read ‘beef, cucumber & dijonnaise on wholewheat bread’. what they failed to mention was the ‘cucumber’ were PICKLES yeuch at least there was cheese in it which ya know was weird since it wasnt on the label… meh FAIL
the brother unit had a different flight from me which was delayed so i consoled myself at gloria jeans with a cup of hot chocolate and the most awesomest gingerbread i have ever eaten! seriously it was so delicious! figures that it was made in melb and that i could hardly find any gloria jeans so before coming back to syd i walked thru 3 terminals just to return to the same gloria jeans to buy a supply of gingerbread hmm that’s dedication no?
we stayed in st kilda about 1 street away from luna park. yes im so tiny in this photo and i knew i couldnt be seen so i was happily scoffing my gelato
the days were spent driving up and down 4 main roads in certain time frames which meant no time to go shopping or eating which was ok cos i am poor haha
my diy falafel pocket from the falafel kitchen. i didnt put enough garlic sauce but it was still tasty. and healthy. so healthy i had to buy some cake for later =P
and driving thru random streets we came across this random graffiti on a building near some train lines at clifton hill. decided to chance taking jumping shots and run screaming when the boom gates went clang clang and started lowering haha i promise we werent being stupid and waited sensibly behind the gates while the train passed
and some more random graffiti!
burger time!
om nom nom. yeah that burger was huge. i made it about 3/4 of the way thru before feeling burgered out. and then turned to cake heh but that will be for the next post =P

it started with the food bloggers saying they had never visited the Eveleigh markets. and then to visiting me for their biscotti supply. and then to having lunch. and so one bright sunny day Shez, Karen and FFichiban rocked up to the markets with cameras at hand and after photographing and tasting everything in sight and making off with my biscuits we trooped along to Blackbird Cafe (Cockle Bay Wharf Level 1 Balcony, 201 Sussex St) where i immediately order a strongbow…
heh it’s my ‘beer’ of choice lol
quattro formaggi ($22.90). i added pumpkin to my 4 cheeses pizza because i needed a vegetable to even out the dairy. shame it was just slices of pumpkin tho because i was hoping for nuggets of pumpkin. nuggets i say!
fish and chips ($19.90). shez has ordered the fish and chips even tho she has just bought a smoked salmon for dinner claiming a white fish is different to pink fish uhm /nods heh
caesar salad with cajun prawns ($19.90). karen has opted for the more healthy option and immediately dumps her parmesan cheese onto my pizza woohoo making it a 5 cheese pizza!
fishermans platter ($24.90). ffichiban’s platter arrives and i stare with food envy at the battered prawns
but then it’s off to lindt and i spy a giant macaron in the cake window mmm macaron
not quite sure of the full name um but the filling was chocolate and hazelnut and was double the size of their normal macarons/delice but it was sadly a little soggy on the top from being in the refrigerated section and while i made it about halfway thru eating it like a hamburger with 2 hands i started feeling a little sugared out and swiped at it in small forkfuls until all that was left was a feeling of ergh that was sweet
shez of course has gotten the waffles. she likes waffles. alot. start a sentence with hey so about waffles and she will immediately proclaim her love for waffles. especially her penguin waffle maker which i so desperately want lol
HEH HEH ffichiban. taking a shot of karens macarons. LOL LOL LOL

one of the topics thats been floating around on twitter (btw follow me here) is what are the best food movies you’ve ever seen. of course willy wonka has come up. as has eat.drink.man.woman. and tampopo. but i cant wait for this:
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. seriously a movie with that as a title has GOT to be good! i’ll be sure to bring a whole lotta snacks into the cinemas when this movie comes out!
Kung Fu Chefs. sammo hung! sure he looks a lil creepy rocking the porn-stache but eeee kung fu + cooking!
hamburger cake
hamburger cake! my attempts at making a cake look like a hamburger…
theres something about the prospect of baking a cake for someone that freaks me out. usually because it’s the icing bit that stresses the crap outta me. however i love the carving up of cake to fit the shape you have in mind and because this post has been creeping around my mind lately i decided to give it a try for josh and wallys b’days. edit: the bomb on the ‘flag’ is noods’ companys logo =P
originally i was only planning on making 2 cakes- 1 choc and 1 vanilla however my vanilla didnt seem to be very fat and i thought splitting it in 2 for the hamburger bun and base was stretching it so ended up baking a 3rd cake… first off make sure your cakes have cooled down! i killed my last cake and bits fell off cos it was still warm and i was impatient. bah. so anywhos once your cakes are cool cut them into hamburger looking cake pieces with the vanilla cakes- shave off the tops for the base ‘bun’, shave off the bottoms for the top ‘bun’ and for the ‘meat’ make sure you dont cut off too much or you wont be able to see it.
step 1. for the lettuce i used rolled fondant tinted green. crinkle the edges.
step 2. i was worried ppl would just be eating a mouthful of cake with no filling so decided to spread a layer of cream cheese icing on the lettuce
step 3. chuck on your chocolate ‘meat’ layer and add some ‘cheese’. i ran out of fondant and had to be creative with my last bits hehe
step 4. for the ‘tomato sauce’ i tinted the cream cheese icing red
whack on your bun on the top and tadah! im a little buggered now so i couldnt be bothered icing the buns since they were close enough colour to the real thing. and i was worried that i might have made it too sweet with 2 layers of fondant icing and 2 layers of cream cheese icing. maybe next time (hah!) i would use buttercream for the lettuce and use dulce de leche for the buns… mmm the sweetness… and yes i know theres no sesame seeds in the pics but i later used a white icing pen to draw them on… OH and we weighed it! the hamburger cake came in at a whopping 1.6kg! fat baby hehe how i wished i could pick it up with my hands and take a bite out of it…
