i dont usually eat cereal let alone muesli for breakfast mainly because i dont have the time but thanks to the awesome people at Medial Moguls i scored some boxes of Carman’s Muesli Rounds! each box has 5 individually wrapped muesli rounds and when i’d received them i’d put them on the top shelf in the cupboard one day and came back a coupla days later and found that they’d been plundered by the boy! he didnt know i was saving them but generously left me one to try hmpf

and while they may look crunchy and hard they are actually delightfully moist and slightly chewy like a gingerbread man. but round. am totally kicking myself for not hiding them better!
sydney winter festival 2009
the sydney winter festival was on last weekend (18-21 June 2009) Cook & Phillip Square and it was snowing! well, not real snow but eh who cares right!

sydney has been pretty unlucky with the weather when it comes to outdoor events! the sydney winter festival was on last weekend (18-21 June) where it managed to rain pretty much nonstop. it didnt help that i was sick either! but a plan is a plan and so Helen and i found ourselves wandering around Cook & Phillip Square one sunday morning eager for some classic winter food

look its snowing! i found it pretty amusing that there were gas heaters lining the makeshift ice rink… also, the ‘snow’ smelled like burnnning…

apparently the ice rink was the first outdoor rink in the cbd since 1959! the tix for ice skating managed to be sold out weeks in advance so helen and i hung around the edge watching the skaters and alternating between jealous glances and laughing at the falls of the uncoordinated heh heh

the currency for the festival were ‘snowflake’ tokens (1 snowflake=$1) and while i understand the need for ‘security reasons’ it wasted a bit of time having to find out the price of food before having to find the snowflake dude. one snowflake seller was calling out cornflakes! get your cornflakes here! heh i asked him why he was saying it and he said people dont really listen anyway and i was the first to ask =D

roasting chestnuts!

a drink was in order for such a cold day and i of course go with the milk hot chocolate with PINK marshmallow from voodoo (4snowflakes)

hotchocolatesuze haha shuddup im sick dammit!

there were quite a few food stalls and the spectacularly colourful paella from El Bulli drew a crowd

but not as big a crowd as the area in front of plan b where a lady was holding a tray of free wagyu burger samples! zomg for a sample size these things were pretty huge!

something that helen and i had immediately decided on having for lunch was from Del Forno- a whole wheel of brie ‘infused’ with rosemary and thyme, baked until all gooey and melty and oh. so. delicious with a loaf of crusty bread and 2 pickles on the side

and some mellow soothing music with our eats on the steps

and cheese craving not fully satisfied we stopped by at the swissotel stand for some Swiss raclette. the halved wheels of cheese are placed under a grill and the top layer soon becomes bubbly and golden and is then scraped onto some potatos, onions and pickles. the jolly chef was also very generous with his samples heh

it was a bit small but that was ok because we were slowly becoming full and sleepy from the music

and a gingerbread man from la boheme for a snack on the way home!
My 26th b’day with 30 foodbloggers at Wagaya

1 year ago if you had told me i would be having a birthday party with a group of people half of whom i’d never met in real life before i would have laughed. but magically the food blogging crew in sydney have become quite a close-knit community. and feeling ambitious i decided to try my luck in organising the biggest meetup evah at wagaya!

before entering the room you had to take off your shoes. for the floor it was all shiny and with cushions! a large lcd tv is also in the room if you want to play a video and theres also an ipod stereo hookup but for some reason no dock for the ipod so make sure you bring a charger! altho with 25 30 people in the room it will be so loud you wont hear the music =P

and just because i could, i decreed a theme- masquerade!

i had booked the largest private room available and was told it would fit 25 people. i uh thought that was just a ‘guideline’ so i squished in 30 foodbloggers heh heh sorry for the squishyness dudes!

but soon the food arrives and cameras are whipped out and soon the room is filled with a lightning storm of super bright flashes

the edamame is first to arrive and masks are set aside to eat properly

my babies! my absolute favourite at wagaya- the deep fried cheese! oh yes they were so tasty that i stole a bowl for myself heh i dont share my cheese =P

lotus root chips were so very moreish! i couldnt stop eating them!

takoyaki. um i dont think i ate these…

and then out comes the dreaded sushi roulette! heh hiding in one of those pieces is a giant ball of wasabi so hot that you will cry hehe um and yeah thats it for the food photos because i was too busy eating =P

group 1 with their sushi. minh is the lucky winner hehe

group 2. i think the lucky winner was trina?

yuletide at restaurant atelier

can you hear the bells ringing? what, it’s christmas already you ask?! never fear for it is just the pre-winter solstice! tonight a gaggle of foodbloggers are gathered here at Restaurant Atelier for a traditional Yuletide dinner featuring Australian Pork

much love to mel for the invite and the lovely stuart from whiteworks for inviting us to partake in the awesomeness that is pork. restaurant atelier was decked out in mini xmas trees, wreaths, shiny baubles and um the sounds of mariah carey’s xmas album…

how can you not smile at the smiley face olive oil?

thick slices of pillowy soft bread with the most awesome butter evah. seriously. EVAH

stewart white from whiteworks pr and president of the food media club of australia

and the wines! oh the wines! Piggs Peake provided the matching wines and boy were they delish!

billy poses with his super sexy cards

entree. pulled neck salad with Crystal Bay prawn; grilled pickled loin of pork with celeriac remoulade; honey-glazed pork hock with roasted apples. there’s something about a plate of separate portions that makes it that much more appealing to me! my fav was definitely the honey-glazed pork which was meltingly soft and had me eyeing everyone elses heh

the foodbloggers whip out their cameras and all of a sudden the room erupts in bright flashes

moisture infused pork is carved at the front of the restaurant and the bloggers scramble to get the money shot

mains. Left: Boned shoulder of pork roasted with a winter herb cure on creamed parsnip and buttered kale. Right: Pot-roasted Murray Valley moisture-infused pork rack with broad beans, pomme cocotte and pine mushrooms. the moisture infused pork definitely lived up to its name! this is no normal pork oh no it is super juicy and magical. if i was stuck on an island with only one animal to eat it would most definitely be piggy. pork belly, bacon, ham, prosciutto, pork chops and zomg pork crackling!

dessert. Poached winter fruits with Christmas pudding ice cream. unexpectedly i loved the poached fruits and like shez, i saved the prunes for last for they were plump and juicy and so very tasty

after returning from a trip to the bathroom helen and i take a peek at the kitchen only to find chef and owner Darren Templeman laughing at us as we ooh and ahh over the gadgets in the kitchen. he is surprisingly cheerful after plating up our 3 courses for a whole restaurant and shows us his extremely well organised fridge and sexy gadgets

heh heh ffichiban’s drawing on the paper tablecloth…
Thanks again to mel, stewart white, Australian Pork, and Restaurant Atelier for the awesome night! also for the sweet sweet 1.2kg rack of pork!
